Israel’s Memorial Day was marked at Kingston, Surbiton & District Synagogue with a ceremony led by Rabbi Yechezkel Mandelbaum & his daughter Nechama, which included candle lighting by several members of the community.

Later, the 70th anniversary of modern Israel’s independence was celebrated in style  with a festive seuda attended by 100 members & friends, including a contingent of Christian supporters.

During the meal, Rabbi Mandelbaum, accompanied by David Prager, led community singing of Israeli songs. Several guests, including one of the Rabbi’s sons Yair Mandelbaum, were invited to give brief statements on the topic: “What Israel means to me”.

In the second part of the evening,  “Love Your Enemies” was shown, a powerful documentary about how the I.D.F. helps Syrians wounded in the civil war to reach Israeli hospitals where they are treated with the latest medical procedures before repatriation.

In a subsequent discussion, several doctors in the audience, including an orthopaedic surgeon, spoke of their admiration for Israel’s humanitarian efforts.

The highly successful event was organised by shul chairman Sheila Mann and her team, and chaired by Jack Green.
