Why Can I Drink All Whiskies But Not All Wines?

Having grown up in Scotland, Rabbi David Mason of Muswell Hill United Synagogue enjoys a good Whisky. But why is it that whereas most Scotch Whiskies are accepted as Kosher, any nice wine needs to be supervised?
