Following the success of its first event at The Grove last year, Watford United Synagogue’s second Golf Classic Day took place on Monday 27 April 2015 at the historic West Herts Golf Club in Croxley Green, Watford. The event raised an impressive £4,500 for two charities, with £2,700 donated to Watford’s Peace Hospice and the balance going to support community activities at Watford Synagogue.

Twenty two four-ball teams took part in the day, which kicked off at 9am with a shotgun start. The ‘UHY Hackers’ team, consisting of Simon Waller, Jeff Duffy, Mark Waterman and Les Kenny, emerged victorious. Possibly one slightly disappointed player was Bob Fuller from Melvyn Shoob's team who missed a hole in one and the prize of a Honda Jazz by less than two inches!

The enjoyable morning of golf was followed by a luncheon and auction conducted by Watford MP Richard Harrington who took time away from his successful parliamentary campaign to support both worthy causes. Among the unique items auctioned was a tee flag and photograph signed by the winning 2014 Ryder Cup Team, a Watford FC pennant signed by members of the town’s newly-promoted Premiership team and a House of Commons bottle of whisky signed by PM David Cameron.

WADS Golf Society founders and event organisers Clive Walters and Barry Freed were supported by several fellow Watford Synagogue members who acted as marshals and registrars, as well as an impressive team of three lady Captains from Hartsbourne Golf Club who adjudicated the scoring.

The WADS Golf Society Annual Charity Golf Classic was established in 2014 by Barry and Clive who coupled their passion for the game with a desire to demonstrate the local Jewish community's commitment to the wider Watford community by raising funds for Peace Hospice care in addition to Watford & District United Synagogue.
