Golders Green Synagogue held a very successful Shabbaton programme last week, to mark Tu Bishvat. Guest scholar Simi Peters, senior faculty member at Nishmat,The Jeanie Schottenstein Center for Advanced Torah Study for Women in Jerusalem, gave three very interesting and well-attended presentations over Shabbat.

On Friday night after Kabbalat Shabbat, Simi spoke topically about Trees and the Roots of Prayer.  Following davening on Shabbat morning, she turned to the sedra and gave a presentation entitled “This is my God and I will Adorn Him: Recognising God at the Splitting of the Sea” in which she delved into the Midrash, comparing and contrasting it with the words of the prophet Yechezkel.  This was followed by a much-appreciated hot Kiddush, which fortified the congregation against the snow outside!

In the afternoon, Simi gave a shiur between Minchah and Maariv, discussing “Is a Man a Tree of the Field? The Ubiquity of a Metaphor”.

Her presentations were all greeted enthusiastically by those who attended.

Younger members of the community were not forgotten as children’s entertainment was provided elsewhere in the building on Friday night and Shabbat morning, enabling parents to attend the shiurim.

Rabbi Dr. Harvey Belovski, Rabbi of Golders Green US said, “Simi Peters is a remarkable scholar and excellent educator. Her presentations over Shabbat were interesting and thought-provoking. We look forward to her joining us again.”
