It’s not often that an Israeli World Cup team play in England but later this month Israel Lacrosse is bringing a team of 35 players and coaches as part of the Israel women’s national team that will compete in the 2017 FIL Women’s World Cup. It will be held at University of Surrey in Guildford, England, from July 12-22. Only 45 minutes from north-west London the team would greatly appreciate our support and we are urging synagogues and individuals to go to Guildford to shout for Team Israel.

Teams from 24 countries are expected to compete at the quadrennial Women’s World Cup. The blue-and-white have their sights set on improving their world ranking from their 8th place finish at Israel’s first Women’s World Cup appearance in 2013.

The roster is composed of both Israeli players, as well as members of the Jewish diaspora, in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL). In conjunction with the Israel Lacrosse Tzedakah Program, each player will be competing in honor of a charity of their choosing.

Jim Gottlieb, a team manager from Israel Lacrosse explained, “The mission of Israel Lacrosse is to make lacrosse the national sport of Israel and use the sport to bridge divided communities in our region”

The local Jewish community in Guildford is hosting them for Shabbat. Surrey’s Student Chaplain Alexander Goldberg said: “It is a huge pleasure to be able to welcome the Lacrosse team from Israel and for them to come and celebrate Shabbat with the Guildford Jewish Community. It is great to be able to show our support for Israel in this way. They are a world class side and ambassadors who are using their sport to build bridges between diverse communities in Israel and between Israel and the Jewish world.”.

Local members of the Jewish community with the help of United Synagogue staff found the team additional training facilities.
