ShabbatUK 2015 at Hadley Wood US

An estimated two-thirds of the membership of the Hadley Wood Jewish Community took part in ShabbatUK activities over the weekend – possibly the highest proportion of any community in the UK! Friday evening saw a special singing and dancing service in our ShabbatUK marquee, as well as a ‘satellite’ minyan at the Hadley Highstone end of the community (another first for HWJC!). These were followed by a Young Families Dinner at the shul attended by approximately 75 people as well as about 8 hosted Shabbat UK Dinners at families throughout the community. All were extremely well-attended and the spirit of this special Shabbat was enjoyed by all.

The guest of honour at a Gala ShabbatUK Lunch for the whole community, attended by a record capacity crowd, was local MP David Burrrowes, a long-standing supporter of both the Hadley Wood community in particular and the wider Jewish community in general. David has a particular interest in the ShabbatUK concept, as he is leading the charge in Parliament of Conservative backbenchers opposed to current proposals for a further relaxation of the Sunday trading laws, believing that this will further erode family values and the universal benefits of a day of rest. During the lunch, David discussed his work on this front and also reiterated his unwavering and highly valued support for the State of Israel, particularly in light of the recent wave of violence affecting the country. He also took questions from the audience, generating a lively and stimulating debate.

Shabbat afternoon saw activities for children, an inspirational seudah shlishit, followed by a musical Havdalah and an excellent fireworks display!

Looking forward to next year!
