On Motzaei Shabbat 4th November, the Community Centre at Raleigh Close (Hendon) was packed for a celebratory Melave Malka marking the centenary of the Balfour Declaration. The room was beautifully decorated with Chagall wall mounts and a Jerusalem backdrop.

An audience of 150 was treated to a characteristically powerful and well-researched presentation by guest speaker Dr Charles Landau (see photo below), together with musical entertainment and a delicious three-course fish supper catered by Tapuach.

Those present included a large number of visitors from outside the Hendon area who were keen to mark this momentous milestone in a fitting manner. The function was also dignified by the presence of Cllr Anthony Finn (former Mayor of Barnet) and Martin Russell (Deputy Lieutenant), along with their wives.

Balfour Shabbat at Raleigh Close was further enhanced by the decision to combine the occasion with the annual AJEX Shabbat, paying honour to local veterans. One of these, Louis Martin (pictured below with his wife Edna) had just turned three years old when the Balfour Declaration was promulgated, and – fittingly – Edna and Louis donated the Kiddush to celebrate his 103rd birthday!
