Belmont Shul members met for interesting, disturbing and harrowing presentations by Ernest Simon BEM (who arrived on the Kindertransport), Kemi (an asylum seeker from Nigeria) and Maria (an asylum seeker from Albania). They shared their stories of fleeing their homelands and the persecution they suffered there, as well as their experiences of settling in the UK.

Kemi and Maria are supported by the United Synagogue’s asylum seeker drop-in centres. The event was held in memory of the late and well-respected Belmont member Hermann Hirschberger MBE. The event was jointly organised by the United Synagogue Chesed Department.

This was the first of a series of events taking place this week at Belmont commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day.
