On Tuesday 2nd July, Lady Valerie Cocks of Hartcliffe spoke at Edgware United Synagogue on ‘Standing up to anti-Semitism and anti- Zionism’ to an audience of 40 attendees.  Lady Cocks is a former director of Labour Friends of Israel and founder of the Trade Union friends of Israel.  She was a close friend of former prime Minister Lord Harold Wilson and his wife Lady Mary, and was an active LFI fundraiser during his leadership of the Labour party in the 1970's.

Lady Cocks spoke about the ‘wonderful friendship’ shown towards Jews and Israel in the Wilson era and how this has changed over the years. She went on to say we must be robust in countering anti-Semitism wherever we find it and particularly in today's climate on the far left.

Lady Cocks highlighted that we must all do our part in countering the threats to our Jewish community in the UK and that we should highlight the suffering of other groups such as Christians in the Middle East too.

Howard Youngerwood gave the vote of thanks to Lady Cocks saying,

‘’You have put your head above the parapet for many years. You’ve given us some delightful fascinating insights in your long career- people we’ve heard of but we haven’t met, our own heroes, sometimes small heroes but heroes nevertheless and you’ve done that with the most extraordinary bravery and determination and guts and I think everyone here wants to thank you.

I’m sure you’ve been thanked many times but we in Edgware thank you for that wonderful courage you still have. Thank you for coming to regale us with your stories and thank you for giving us such an interesting and delightful evening.’’
