In celebration of the World Shabbos Project last week, Chigwell & Hainault laid on a rousing Kabbalat Shabbat service, led by Rafi Sandford, aged 11. Born and raised in our community by proud parents Steven (also Chigwell born and bred) and Carly, and educated at Wohl Ilford Jewish Primary School and now  Hasmonean High, Rafi is very committed to his Judaism and blessed with a beautiful voice. It's not surprising that over 150 men, women and children turned out, despite the rain and early Shabbat, to hear Rafi lead  Kabbalat Shabbat. Rafi's rendition of Lecha Dodi to the tune of Leonard Cohen's "Halleluyah" was particularly enjoyed by many people.

Maariv itself was led by another  Rafi, Rabbi Rafi Goodwin, our Associate Rabbi, a chazzan in his own right. Rafi Sandford also led the congregation in Yigdal,  to the tune of Yerushalayim Shel Zahav, and everyone joined in.

After the service, the congregation was treated to  Etta Appelbaum's homemade chicken soup at the kiddush. The whole event was like a simcha, with a very wide cross-section of the community attending.

We look forward to doing this again.
