Over 80 people attended Hampstead United Synagogue’s exciting and innovative Yom Ha’atzmaut event last week. Organized by Josh and Yocheved Zaitschek.

Although the evening included Israeli Shwarma buffet, the main attraction was an exclusive film about Gilad Shalit, a captured Israeli soldier who was released as part of a prisoner exchange deal in 2011 and a talk from UJIA by Chief Executive Michael Wegier.

The film was a powerful behind the scenes at Gilad, his family and their emotional and physical journey throughout his captivity and life afterwards. Seeing such powerful footage and hearing how Gilad values his freedom really helped the audience appreciate what Yom Ha’atzmaut is all about and about the sacrifices people make for another’s freedom.

Mr Wegier spoke about the challenges facing Israel today, as well as holding a question and answer session about the Shalit family.
