One of our members, Mr Eli Abt, aged 90, will be embarking on an incredible adventure, a skydive to raise money for Jewish Care and mark his 90th birthday! Eli Abt, a member of Finchley United Synagogue, a Kindertransport refugee and retired architect, will be making the 13,000 feet jump to raise his target of £6895 for the charity.

He is doing so for a number of reasons, including his 90th birthday this year and celebrating the 60th Wedding anniversary with his wife Muriel. Mr Abt is also doing the jump as this year is the 80th anniversary since he arrived as a child on the Kindertransport from Nazi Germany, with a miraculous family reunion with his mother and brother taking place here in September 1939.

Mr Abt told us ‘’I shall always be in debt to this country for rescuing me. Why am I raising money for Jewish Care? Extending Hillel’s dictum to say- “If we don’t care for our own, who will? And if not now, when?”, it’s particularly important that at a time of political and economic instability we’re seen to be up to the mark with our obligations to one of our community’s premier welfare organisations. We’ve decided that the best way of giving thanks for these blessings is to include in this special celebration those who might be less fortunate than ourselves, while at the same time sharing with you something I’ve wanted to do for years.’’
