On the Shabbat of the 5th and 6th July, Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and his wife Valerie spent Shabbat with the community at Central Synagogue, London. 200 people attended the Shabbat morning service, with a meaningful Dvar Torah (sermon) by the Chief Rabbi., followed by a bumper Kiddush for the entire community.

This was followed by a sold out lunch for the Young Professionals and Young Families of the community, of which 70 attended. The Chief Rabbi gave an inspiring talk to the adults about ‘The Best Present You can Give’, while the children were entertained outside.  The Chief Rabbi went through the different Hebrew words for gifts and presents and explained that giving of yourself is the best way to give. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon and were grateful to hear insights from the Chief Rabbi in their community.

In the evening, a Seudah, third meal, was held for 50 people in the community with a talk by the Chief Rabbi on the 7 best ways to conflict resolution using examples from the Torah.

Participant Julietta Gishen said, “It was an absolute honour to hear the Chief Rabbi speak in the warm and welcoming Central Synagogue.  I look forward to going back soon.”

Rabbi Barry Lerer of Central Synagogue said about the Shabbat, “It was such an honour for us to have the Chief Rabbi and Valerie Mirvis at Central for an action packed Shabbat.  There was a fantastic buzz during the service,  at the kiddush, during the lunch and at the Seuda and it was particularly wonderful to see so many young people in the synagogue. So many people have commented how inspired they were by the Chief Rabbis words.”
