Borehamwood and Elstree United Synagogue (BES) is delighted to announce the appointment of Rabbi Alex Chapper to the role of Community Rabbi for BES.

Rabbi Chapper, currently Rabbi of Ilford Federation Synagogue, brings a wealth of experience with over 17 years in the Rabbinate, plus a history of innovation and creativity, and a deep love of the communities that he has worked for.

In his role as Community Rabbi, Rabbi Chapper will have responsibility for ministering to and developing BES@Yavneh in the Southside of Borehamwood, as well as designing and leading inspirational programmes, and providing additional spiritual leadership and pastoral care for the whole BES community.

Rabbi Chapper grew up within the United Synagogue and is married to Rebbetzen Eva. Together with their five sons, they are very much looking forward to joining the fast-growing BES community.

Commenting on the appointment, Rabbi Kanterovitz, Senior Rabbi at BES said: “My wife and I are delighted to welcome Rabbi Alex and Rebbetzen Eva. I am confident that together, we will be able to pursue our vision of one united and thriving community operating across multiple, vibrant sites to create an exciting future for BES.”

Rabbi Chapper said: "Eva and I will be sorry to leave the Ilford Federation community. They have treated us incredibly well throughout our time here and we have made a number of enduring friendships. The community has shown us tremendous respect and love and been receptive to our ideas which has enabled us to achieve so much together. At the same time, we are very excited about the new challenge of joining Borehamwood & Elstree Synagogue. It’s such a vibrant and dynamic community and we look forward to contributing to its future growth and development."

Anne Gordon, Chairman of BES added: “With over 2,500 members, BES is one of the fastest growing and most vibrant Jewish communities in the UK, and the centre of Jewish life in Borehamwood. Rabbi Chapper’s addition to our Rabbinic team enables us to build on our reputation as a leading and growing Modern Orthodox, Zionist, inclusive, family-friendly United Synagogue, built upon Jewish living, learning and caring. We are also grateful to Rabbi Yaacov Finn who has been acting as interim Rabbi at BES@Yavneh, and will stay on in this role until Rabbi Chapper takes up his new position.”

Rabbi Chapper is expected to begin his new role shortly after Pesach. He replaces Rabbi Boruch Boudilovsky who, together with his wife Esther, recently made Aliya after more than five years as part of the BES community.
