US WOMEN LEAD THE WAY
54 women attended the first US Women’s Conference, held at Central United Synagogue on February 12th, to improve their leadership skills and knowledge, and to discuss the role of women and lay-leadership in the US and the wider Jewish Community.
Throughout the Conference there were several workshops, discussions and talks on offer to participants. Ten prominent women in the community such as Women Representative at the US Trustee Board, Doreen Samuels, Director of the Jewish Volunteering Network, Leonie Lewis, and Nicky Goldman, Director of the new LEAD organisation were part of a team that led the activities which included a workshop on how to have a work-life balance, making one’s voice heard and changing the face of education for women.
Laura Marks, leader of the JLC’s Commission on Women in Jewish leadership discussed ‘women’s need to correct the gender imbalance at Trustee level’ over lunch and Rosalind Preston OBE, who has led two research based women’s reviews, interviewed the Chair of Limmud Carolyn Bogush, about her challenging role.
The event was run in conjunction with Jewish Leadership Excellence and Development, the JVN and London School of Jewish Studies.
Dalia Cramer, Co-Chair of the US Women’s Conference commented;
“The real success of the event is that so many women felt motivated and engaged to offer to take up leadership positions across a variety of different organisations. The birth of US Women’s Conference marks a sea change in the role of women in the United Synagogue.”
Naomi Landy, US Women Representative at the Trustee Board commented;
“I found it very interesting – certainly food for thought. All the speakers I heard were excellent – a really high standard. It was also good to meet new people.”
