ENFIELD VOTES TO BECOME A MEMBER OF THE UNITED SYNAGOGUE
The United Synagogue is delighted to announce that on Monday evening, the Enfield and Winchmore Hill affiliated United Synagogue voted overwhelmingly to become a full member of the United Synagogue, subject to a vote at US council in March.
Enfield has close to 200 members and as more Jewish families choose to settle in the area, hopefully the community will become more and more popular, with younger couples joining the synagogue. Since the appointment of Rabbi Sufrin in 2008, the Synagogue has seen a significant increase in attendance at weekly Shabbat services, and the community felt that the collaboration with the United Synagogue would help them to continue to flourish with access to benefits including Tribe Community Membership and the opportunity to apply for grants to improve provision for the community.
During the 1940s, the Synagogue building was used as a refuge for Jews in the area who had escaped Nazi persecution. The Enfield and Winchmore Hill community evolved out of this as Jewish families continued to use the building as a meeting place after the war. Enfield and Winchmore Hill Synagogue was officially founded in 1949.
David Kaplan, Community Services Director said;
“We are all delighted that the Enfield and Winchmore Hill community have decided to join the US as a full member and we are looking forward to working in close partnership for the growth and development of the community with their minister Rabbi Sufrin and the whole Enfield board.”
Tony Flacks, acting Chair of Enfield and Winchmore Hill United Synagogue commented;
“We are delighted that the United Synagogue sees the huge potential of the Enfield and Winchmore Hill community, and we are extremely excited to begin this new chapter which will enable us to grow and attract new members. The support the United Synagogue has to offer will give us the tools to build on our strong foundations developed over the last 62 years.”
Rabbi Sufrin, Minister of the Enfield & Winchmore Hill Synagogue added;
“There is always a wonderful atmosphere in our shul and I welcome the opportunities that full membership will bring to the community. The momentous decision gives us the opportunity to renew and refresh and we can now look forward to an even brighter future with the full support of the United Synagogue.”
