CHANUKAH ON ICE 2011

The annual Tribe ‘Chanukah on Ice’ event returned to the Tower of London on the first night of Chanukah for a chilly but exciting afternoon of ice skating, candle lighting and doughnut eating.

250 Tribe members arrived with their families to the sold out event at the ice rink to skate against the spectacular backdrop of the London skyline.

Following a fun hour of skating, everyone crowded around the Tribe Chanukiah, which had been hand built by Tribe staff, for candle lighting led by Rabbi David Mason of Muswell Hill United Synagogue. This included an uplifting rendition of Maoz Tzur and Tribe staff were on hand to serve doughnuts which were greatly appreciated by the crowd.

Josh Sagal, Tribe Project Executive commented:

“This has been our most successful ‘Chanukah on Ice’ ever and a great time was had by all. I was amazed at how skilfully the younger members took to the ice, whereas the older members struggled to stay upright!”

Jeremy Jacobs, Chief Executive of United Synagogue added:

“I can’t get over the growth of the annual Tribe Chanukah on Ice event. People are clearly having a great time and with so many people from different US communities in attendance, it is a wonderful opportunity to bond as one which is exactly what the US is all about.”

Harry Burke, aged 11 from Watford United Synagogue said:

“It was a very interesting experience. Lots of fun and entertaining watching people fall over, myself included! Tribe Chanukah on Ice was a really good night and I hope to come back next year.”
