JOHN LEWIS CONTINUES TO SELL PRODUCTS OF ISRAELI ORIGIN

In the Ask the Rabbi column in last week's issue of the Jewish News and on www.totallyjewish.com, it was implied that a memo from John Lewis indicated the company was considering a boycott of Israeli goods. This is not the case. John Lewis is considering no such boycott.

Explaining the purpose of the memo, the company's head of sourcing, Sean Allam, told us: "Due to an increased number of enquiries from customers about our sourcing of products from Israel, we felt it prudent to find out the up-to-date situation from our suppliers so that our partners (staff) could respond with confidence to these questions.

"We considered it appropriate, therefore, to confirm the volume of products which we stock that are of Israeli origin or which contain ingredients and components which are sourced from Israel.

"The memorandum which requested that information contained absolutely no suggestion that our suppliers should cease to stock products of Israeli origin. The reference to a 'nil return' contained in the communication was simply to ensure a response from every supplier contacted.

"We take this opportunity to assure you that our policy has absolutely not changed. We source from suppliers throughout the world to provide our customers with a wide range of products and will continue to do so.

"John Lewis takes pride in being a non-aligned company and we do not discriminate against or boycott companies which are operating ethically within the law of their country and conforming to the John Lewis Partnership's robust ethical requirements.

"John Lewis does and will continue to sell products of Israeli origin.
