NORTHWOOD SYNAGOGUE APPOINTS NEW RABBI

Northwood United Synagogue is delighted to announce that Rabbi Dr. Moshe Freedman has been appointed as its new Rabbi and will take up the position in March 2009.

Rabbi Freedman, who is originally from Kingston-upon-Thames, currently lives in Jerusalem and attained rabbinical ordination while studying at Yeshivat Darche Noam/David Shapell College of Jewish Studies where he runs a series of classes on Jewish history and the development of halacha. He is also participating in the Ner Le'Elef Leadership Training Programme and tutoring students on Pathways, the Israel experience and educational programme for young people. Prior to his move to Israel, Rabbi Freedman was Ba'al Tefilah at Kingston, Surbiton and District Synagogue and taught at the cheder there for 5 years. He is married to Ilana and has two young children.

On his appointment, Rabbi Dr Moshe Freedman commented: "Ilana and I are delighted to have been given the opportunity to serve the Jewish community in Northwood and help to build on its past achievements. It is very exciting to enter the rabbinate with such a vibrant and caring community and to join the wider United Synagogue family."

Alan Taylor, Chairman of Northwood, commented: "Northwood United Synagogue has taken another exciting and forward thinking step in its choice of Rabbi Dr. Moshe Freedman and Rebbetzin Ilana. They are a very talented couple with young children and we are sure they will greatly add to the attraction of Northwood as a place of choice for all families and retirees seeking US orthodoxy in the beautiful surroundings of our area. We welcome the Freedmans to our community and hope that they will be happy here for many years to come."

Jeremy Jacobs, Chief Executive of the United Synagogue said: "We are delighted to welcome Rabbi Freedman into the US family. He and his wife are a wonderful couple who were one of a number of Rabbinic interns we welcomed to our community at the High Holy Days. His influence at the Kingston community then was very positive and we know that they are joining a lovely welcoming community at Northwood who will make them feel very much at home."
