TRIBE HOSTS SUCCESSFUL ISRAEL SHABBATON

Over 200 British Gap Year students joined TRIBE Israel last weekend for its annual Shabbaton, which was hosted in the north of Israel at the Eden Inn Hotel, Zichron Yaakov. The theme for Shabbaton was 'Unite' and aimed to bring all the people from the United Synagogue family together who are taking their gap year in Israel. Tribe members from over 20 youth movements, yeshivot and seminaries were represented.

Over the course of the Shabbat, students participated in a series of workshops and discussion groups which focused on how each student could make a difference within the Jewish community on their return to the UK. The United Synagogue's Chief Executive Jeremy Jacobs was present who flew in especially for the weekend. Tribe Israel Rabbi, Gideon Sylvester helped run educational sessions entitled "Life Journeys" and "Is there a place for Zionism in the United Synagogue" and the students also enjoyed a talk from prominent orthodox basketball player, Tamir Goodman who currently plays for Maccabi Haifa and is dubbed the Jewish Jordan.

Simone Matlin of Bnei Akiva said: "The Tribe Israel Shabbaton was a wonderful event to socialise and have fun with such a large amount of British students on their gap year in Israel as well as engaging in discussion about the future of our Jewish Community. It was a weekend enjoyed by everyone and helped us to see the importance of Tribe's role in Israel."

Merrisa Gross, Tribe Israel Executive said: "It was wonderful to have over 200 students from a wide spectrum of Youth Movements, Seminaries and Yeshivot come together in Israel under the Tribe umbrella to enjoy an inspiring and fun Shabbat. There was a lovely atmosphere throughout the whole weekend and highlighted the potential that Tribe and the United Synagogue have to make a vibrant community with the students who are our future leaders. "
