TRIBE SUMMER SCHEMES GET TO GRIPS WITH LIFE-SAVING SKILLS

Over 250 Tribe kids aged 5-11 took part in this year’s Tribe Summer Schemes, held for the past two weeks at six different synagogues across London including Edgware, Brondesbury Park, Hendon, Finchley, Radlett and Barnet.

A First Aid course was run for the first time for Tribe’s older camp which was hosted by a professional paramedic. Participants aged 7 – 11 were taught basic First Aid in a fun, interactive session which included how to dial 999, how to stop a cut from bleeding, the correct way to arrange a sling and a bandage, as well as how to practice the recovery position.

As well as a First Aid course, camp participants were able to enjoy a whole host of enjoyable activities each day including T-Shirt decorating, animal shows, challah baking for Shabbat, and music and circus workshops. Every morning participants also took part in the daily prayers with a special programme delivered for Tisha B’Av. Both weeks were themed, the first being Fantasy Week where each day participants were transformed into an exciting character through various activities, and this week’s ‘Tribe’s Got Talent’ week will feature a live finale on Friday in front of family and friends.

Eve Lewis, aged 10, a participant at Edgware United Synagogue Tribe Summer Scheme, said:
“Tribe Summer Scheme has been great fun and the First Aid programme was really useful because I now know how to help people if I need to.”

Jemma Layton, a leader at the Edgware United Synagogue Tribe Summer Scheme said:
“This year Tribe Summer Scheme has provided a fantastic balance of fun and informative sessions. The kids responded really well to the First Aid session, which is a tough topic to cover. It’s good to know that they are old enough to learn these essential skills.

Yael Peleg, Tribe Manager, commented:
“Tribe Summer Schemes have been a great success this year, encouraging the kids to learn, have fun and socialise through participating in a variety of activities. Our Summer Schemes are key to the United Synagogue’s strategy of engaging and enriching young Jewish lives and I look forward to seeing all the kids back next year.”
