TRIBE ENABLE FIRST TORAH READING IN 25 YEARS AT HABS IN HONOUR OF SCHOOL LEAVERS

The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys School Jewish Society held a special Shacharit minyan last Thursday in honour of the upper sixth form school leavers who had set up the service two years ago. Around 60 people attended the service and were fortunate to hear the first leining at the school in over 25 years. A Torah was kindly provided by Tribe and brought in by Tribe Executive Director Rabbi Shaw.

After participating on a Tribe Poland trip two years ago, the boys were inspired to set up the minyan. Every morning these boys put on tefillin and davened shacharit, and gradually more students joined them until a regular minyan was established.

Alex Harrison, former JSoc chair and a founder of the Shacharit minyan, said:

"It was great to see something small and young grow so quickly into such a successful minyan, attracting boys of all years together every morning."

Tribe Executive Director Rabbi Andrew Shaw said;

“It was a great honour to come back to my old school and see the thriving minyan that has been going strong for two years, and I want to congratulate the boys who set it up. The minyan came about following a trip to Poland with Tribe, where we encouraged the students to go back to the UK and do something positive for their Jewish identity.

To have created a regular minyan at their school is quite remarkable and I hope that younger Jewish students at Habs will follow in their footsteps and embrace their own Jewish identity whilst still at school.”
