TRIBE LAUNCH THE 'TRIBE KOSHER APPRENTICE'COMPETITION

Tribe has launched the ‘Tribe Kosher Apprentice’ competition for 150 children in three Jewish Primary Schools - Rosh Pinah, Moriah and Kerem – and will soon launch it in Mathilda Marks Kennedy.

Tribe’s version of the ‘Apprentice’ is designed for school children in year six to create their own kosher snack for the summer and aims to impart important knowledge relating to teamwork, presentation skills, healthy eating, and the basic laws of Kashrut.

Split into small groups, each team must come up with a team name, a description of the product, ingredients list, design of the snack including its shape and packaging, a logo or a mascot, and a presentation plan. At the end of the task, each project will be judged by a panel of Tribe staff headed by Rabbi Andrew Shaw, Tribe’s Executive Director.

To launch the ‘Tribe Kosher Apprentice’ competition in Rosh Pinah, the pupils were given the task of creating a giant Rice Krispie square that could fit inside a crate. The launch task at Moriah and Kerem primary schools saw the children competing to build the highest tower using marshmallows and spaghetti!

To provide information on Keeping Kosher, Tribe gave the pupils a simple guide to keeping Kosher as well as some helpful extracts from the Kosher Nosh guide. The schools will be incorporating the ‘Tribe Kosher Apprentice’ into their regular lessons such as Art to look at different types of packaging.

Speaking after the launches, Hollie Conway, Tribe Kids Fieldworker said: “It was fantastic to see the children so excited about this brand new programme. We are delighted to initiate a project which encourages kids to positively engage with kosher living.”

Daniel Gastwirth, Head of Jewish Studies at Moriah Jewish Day School commented: “Tribe launched a fantastic 'apprentice' style competition with Year 6 to design their own brand new, innovative, kosher snack. To get the creative juices flowing, the first task was to try and build the tallest tower possible using just marshmallows and spaghetti sticks. In groups of four, the children made several 'sticky' attempts and eventually the tallest tower was declared the winner! The groups are all now working on their innovative snack, designing a logo, thinking about kosher ingredients and catchy slogans and preparing to present their product to the Tribe judging team soon!”
