US WOMEN GET TOP TIPS FROM FIRST FEMALE PRESIDENT OF IPA

Nicola Mendelsohn, the first female president of the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising [IPA], gave a dynamic presentation at the US Women annual dinner on May 25th at Borehamwood and Elstree United Synagogue.

The one hundred and sixty women, who attended from twenty shuls, heard Mrs Mendelsohn describe her career achievements, from student to high-flying positions in major advertisng companies, and her pride in now running her own advertising agency. Mrs Mendelsohn then passed on her top ten tips for getting to the top: “Be true to yourself and hold onto your values; work very hard to get lucky; give people credit and have Chutzpah. When in a fix, honesty is the best policy; don’t believe what is written in the press; when you’re wrong don’t be afraid to admit it; judge people by their actions – not what they say; be proud to be Jewish and remember to whistle if you want to cry (it is impossible to do both together)”

In addition, Co-Chair of US Women, Dalia Cramer, gave a report on the activities of US Women over the past year. This included the factthat three women from the US Executive now sit as representatives at the US Trustee table, and, while two of them will remain, a further two will be elected in the upcoming US Council elections.

Dalia then revealed the new US Women Mission Statement: “The Mission of US Women is to make a difference to the lives of female members of the United Synagogue regardless of age, status or level of religious observance; by supporting their aspirations within their Communities, representing their views to the United Synagogue and ensuring that they can participate in all aspects of Community life.”

Nicola Mendelsohn, president of the Institute of Practioners in Advertising remarked on the event: “I was hugely honoured to be asked to speak about my experiences as a Jewish women in business over the last 20 years at the annual US Women’s Dinner. It was wonderful to see all the different tables of women from accross the community. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and the warmth that was shown to me on the night. Wishing the group only continued success in the important work that it undertakes.”

Commenting on the evening, Co-Chair of US Women, Irene Leeman said: “The highlight of the evening was definitely guest speaker Nicola Mendelsohn, a dynamic and charismatic speaker…she had her audience in stiches of laughter as she illustrated with personal anecdotes her ten tips for getting to the top.”
