CLOSING THE GAP
Tribe Israel hosted “Closing the Gap” on Monday 16th May in Israel for 120 British students which was aimed at helping the students prepare for university life. Future university students came from all around the country, including the Bnei Akiva Lehava programme from their kibbutz on Beit Shan and FZY from Bat Yam.
Tribe members were able to participate in four invigorating sessions; “Campus Life, It’s in Your Hands” run by James Proops, a Tribe activist currently studying in Shappels Yeshiva, , “Keeping those Israel Sparks Alight” led by Leanne Binstock, a previous University Campus worker , “Campus Survival Guide”, a talk led by Rabbi Fishman, a previous Chaplain in Cambridge University, and “Being a Light unto the Nations” chaired by Menachem Salasnik, Tribe FZY Coordinator. Following the sessions students attended a dinner and were seated at tables correlating to the University they will be attending in September, enabling them to meet fellow students.
Rabbi Andrew Shaw, Executive Director of Tribe, delivered an inspiring keynote speech encouraging all students to be involved in Jewish campus activity and Tribe. He commented: “It is so important for all of you sitting here in this room to stay involved in Jewish life, be role models and help curb the tide of assimilation. We need each and every one of you!”
Deborah Marmot, from FZY year course said; “Closing the Gap was a really informative evening where all the British Jews on their gap year were united together for the last time this year. Throughout the year Tribe has been a fantastic support, helping strengthen our ties to Israel and enabling us to see the importance of continuing to strengthen British Jewry when we go home. ”
Alex Fenton, from BA Lehava said; “The sessions really prepared me for university, helped me with Israel advocacy, and answered many of the concerns I had about campus life.”
Simon Lindal from Yeshivat Eretz Ha Zvi, BA Torani commented;“I thought it was extremely useful to get to know different people going to my university giving me a head start and a more comfortable start.”
