US CHESED MAKES THE MITZVAH OF GIVING ON PURIM DOUBLY AS REWARDING
With the aim of bringing the spirit and happiness of Purim to the more isolated people within the Jewish community, US Chesed organised a fantastic initiative whereby for every Mishloach Manot purchased from US Chesed, a second package was delivered to community members whom the local care groups felt would appreciate a visit on Purim day.
The project was piloted in Mill Hill, Finchley and Radlett United Synagogues where teams of volunteers worked at a feverish pace, sorting and packing the impressive looking Misloach Manot.
An amazing 400 Mishloach Manot packages were prepared in record time and were sold within the communities soon after.
Stuart Levy who led the ‘Kinloss Squad’ of Year Seven volunteers (11 & 12 year olds) commented:
“It was great to see my squad working on this project to put the Mishloach Manot parcels together. Their generosity in buying some of the Mishloach Manot and their enthusiasm has been even greater knowing that their efforts will also make a real difference to other members of our community this Purim.”
Rabbi Michael Laitner of US Living & Learning spoke of the importance of charity on Purim. He said:
“Anyone who thinks Purim is simply a holiday where we remember ‘they tried to kill us, we won; so we eat, drink, put on crazy costumes and go wild!’ would be missing a big part of Purim. Purim is not simply about celebrating. It’s the only festival with an actual requirement to give two different kinds of food gifts to at least one other person (Mishloach Manot) and to give charity to the needy (Matanot L’evyonim), all on the day of Purim itself.”
Candice Woolfson, Director of US Chesed has been delighted at the success of this initiative and hopes to expand it to other communities next year. She said:
“Purim is the only Jewish festival where it is a mitzvah to give gifts of food to others. This year we asked the community to buy Misloach Manot from us for their family and friends while at the same time, making a difference to a fellow member in their community. We have been overwhelmed by the demand and sold out very quickly! We hope that this project will touch many members who would otherwise not have celebrated Purim. We hope Project Chesed has helped to bring a Purim Sameach to all of the community.”
