KLBD MAKES A SWEET BREAKTHROUGH FOR KOSHER CONSUMERS
In a significant breakthrough for kosher consumers, the United Synagogue is delighted to announce that all Tate & Lyle Granulated and Caster sugar has now been approved for Passover year-round by the London Beth Din and bears the KLBD-P logo. This means it will be available across the country at normal prices.
Following several months of intensive work with Tate & Lyle eradicating any potential problems, the Kashrut Division has ensured that all Tate & Lyle granulated sugar is kosher for Pesach leMehadrin throughout the whole year. In the past sugar has always been manufactured on a specific supervised basis for Passover and sold bearing a kosher for Passover label – making it much more expensive for the consumer than usual sugar. It is now available all over the country at normal prices.
Sugar is a sophisticated product involving processing aids such as flocculants, antifoams, pan aids and enzymes in its manufacturing process. There can also be potential problems of shared use of equipment with chometz products such as glucose syrup as well as issues of shared steam and cooling water. This is why previously it has had to be especially manufactured for Passover.
Announcing the new KLBD-P certification, Rabbi Jeremy Conway, US’s Kashrut Director said: “This is a significant breakthrough for Kosher Certification in this country. The London Beth Din is currently working with manufacturers of other staple products with a view to similarly ensuring the regular product available across the country at normal prices is acceptable for Passover use – Kosher for Pesach leMehadrin. We wish the community a sweet and kosher Passover.”
