INTERIM RABBI APPOINTED AT BOREHAMWOOD AND ELSTREE SYNAGOGUE
This week the Honorary Officers at Borehamwood & Elstree United Synagogue informed the community of the appointment of Rabbi Shimshon Silkin as Interim Minister while the search for a permanent replacement to Rabbi Brawer takes place.
Rabbi Silkin currently runs programmes for education charity seed in the Borehamwood region and a partnership agreement has been entered into between the United Synagogue and seed which will see Rabbi Silkin become the full-time Interim Rabbi with effect from the 1st September 2011.
The Honorary Officers are confident that this new appointment will enable a smooth transition between Rabbi Brawer’s ministry to his successor thus enabling many of the key educational and pastoral initiatives and projects within such a vibrant and large community to continue to develop and flourish.
Chairman Anthony Arnold said: “We wanted to make certain that our ongoing projects will continue as will the care for our members and we are most grateful to Rabbi Silkin for agreeing to work with us on a full time basis. We have every confidence that he, together with our Associate Rabbi, Rabbi Boudilovsky, will form a great team ensuring that we remain one of the leading United Synagogue communities.”
Rabbi Silkin and his wife Sarah currently run a wide range of educational courses and programmes in the Borehamwood and Elstree Jewish community. These include home study groups, one to one learning, and sessions for women run by Sarah such as the new mothers programme ‘Baby & Bagels’.
Rabbi Silkin was keen to emphasise his appreciation of the support he has received from the community. He said: “The entire community has been very supportive of both myself and Sarah and has shown much enthusiasm and appreciation for the programmes that we run. We came to Borehamwood with the intention to engage and be an asset and with the community now looking for positive continuity I have taken on the role of Interim Rabbi to assist them during this time of change.”
