SOUTH LONDON UNITED SYNAGOGUE WELCOMES BACK A FAMILIAR FACE
43 years after leaving the South London Jewish Community and his role as head of Brixton Cheder, Rabbi Yaacov Grunewald has made a moving return as the new part time Rabbi of the South London United Synagogue. On Sunday 30th of January, an official announcement was made by Chairman Geoffrey Harris who was delighted with the appointment;
Mr Harris said: “We regard ourselves a very fortunate community to welcome Rabbi Grunewald as our new Rabbi. It certainly has a special significance as he is returning after more than four decades since he left the South London Community to begin his Rabbinical Journey. We look forward to a long and happy relationship.”
Rabbi Grunewald’s association with the South London Community began in 1968 when he taught over 200 children at Brixton Synagogue Cheder before moving on to become Assistant Minister at St John’s Wood United Synagogue and then onto Pinner United Synagogue where he stayed as the Rabbi for the last 34 years.
Rabbi Grunewald commented: “It is a new beginning for me and I am very excited about completing the full circle and coming back to South London to continue my Rabbinical career. I am looking forward to getting started.”
In addition to the appointment of Rabbi Grunewald, 2011 is also a of special significance as it is the 25th anniversary of the South London Synagogue. Officially opened in 1986, South London Synagogue was the result of a merger of the Streatham and Borough and Brixton United Synagogues. A warm, mature community of 150 members, South London Synagogue offers weekly programmes which include a friendship club on Thursdays, weekly Shiurim and prayer services throughout the week.
