The United Synagogue

Special Tribute Evening And New Welfare Fund To Honour Memory Of Lady J

PRESS RELEASE

London,
1st June 2010

SPECIAL TRIBUTE EVENING AND NEW WELFARE FUND TO HONOUR MEMORY OF LADY J

On Tuesday 22nd June, the United Synagogue will lead the community in honouring the memory of Lady Jakobovits, (known affectionately as Lady J), who passed away in May.

Following an overwhelming desire to honour the memory of Lady J and her unique place at the heart of the community, the United Synagogue (US) is proud to be hosting a “Tribute to Lady J” at St John’s Wood United Synagogue. A large gathering is expected to attend the Tribute which will include music, readings about Lady J’s life and experiences as well as an address by the Chief Rabbi – reflecting the major role Lady J played in the lives of so many communal organisations and community members.

To commemorate Lady J’s outstanding achievements in the field of chesed (welfare & loving-kindness), the US is also creating a special fund in her memory, exclusively intended to support the extensive welfare work of the United Synagogue community. Initiatives that will be supported through this new fund will include the "Lady J Volunteer Training Programme", which will help develop the US’ network of over 1,000 volunteers who care for the elderly, isolated and vulnerable in each community. The fund will also facilitate the creation of the "Lady J Chesed Co-ordinator" – a role focused on providing support to more isolated communities where there is a shortage of volunteer resources.

Dr. Simon Hochhauser, President of the United Synagogue, commented: “Lady Jakobovits was the life of our community. We have organised this Tribute to celebrate and commemorate her unstinting generosity, and her steadfast commitment and contribution to the United Synagogue. We miss her greatly and we feel privileged to have had the opportunity to know this extraordinary and unique lady.”

Attendance at the event on 22nd June is strictly by ticket only. People wishing to attend have been encouraged to apply for tickets online via the United Synagogue’s website www.theus.org.uk/ladyjtribute .

For those applying for tickets, and others who wish to express their thanks and support, there is an opportunity on the website to leave messages of condolence and memorial. These will be passed onto her family.
