PRESS RELEASE

PRESTIGIOUS AWARD FOR HAMPSTEAD UNITED SYNAGOGUE

The Hampstead United Synagogue has been given a prestigious award by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) at their annual awards ceremony. RICS recognised Hampstead’s recent project to renovate and restore the late Victorian Synagogue as an impressive restoration of a grade 2 listed synagogue.

RICS announced the synagogue as the Runner-up in the building conservation category coming second only to The Monument, one of the UK’s leading national icons.

The entries for the award were numerous, with 16 contenders being shortlisted and Hampstead Synagogue superseding various important buildings by other distinguished architects in the field, such as The Royal Institution, The Royal College of Pathologists, Hall Place and St Botolph’s Hall.

During the review process, the judges visited the building twice, asking many questions, and examining the contract documentation and drawings, as well as the planning and background papers. The judges paid particular attention to the construction materials and techniques used, conservation achievements, background research undertaken and the project’s long-term prospects.

On hearing the announcement Stephen Rajbenbach, US Consultant Head of Property, said: "This is the first such award for a synagogue and we are delighted that the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors has recognised the time, effort and thought that has gone into the works at Hampstead. This was a team effort by many individuals including Stephen Levrant, the conservation architect, and it is fantastic that we have national recognition for a job well done.”
