US UNVEILS INVESTMENT IN NEW EDUCATION STRATEGY
An inspiring vision of Jewish education that links communities, schools and homes was unveiled at this week’s United Synagogue Council meeting. This long term strategy is being kick-started by the US with a commitment of over £200,000 this year alone.
The new education programme will dramatically increase the educational input into Tribe and will create a whole new stream of activity for older members, from engaged couples through to families and grandparents. The integrated strategy will offer a wide range of initiatives including a re-creation of the Cheder system; trips to Israel and Europe; new support for children’s services at shul; programmes tailored to specific groups such as recent graduates and newlyweds; and a raft of new publications for all, making use of both conventional and online distribution.
The new strategy is headed up by Rabbi Andrew Shaw, one of the leading figures behind the creation of Tribe, the US’s successful youth arm. Presenting the plan he said: “We’ve shown how big an impact we can have on communities and their members with Tribe’s innovative and exciting programmes – it’s time to do this for all our members with a joined-up educational strategy.”
He continued: “Our tradition has put learning at the heart of Judaism for thousands of years. Today’s challenge is to bring that tradition to life not only within our local shul communities but also in the thousands of homes of our members.”
Over 100,000 people belong to US communities and the organisation is pursuing this strategy to transform their lives through tailored programmes and by sharing best practice across US communities.
Jeremy Jacobs, Chief Executive of the US explained: “We want to enrich the lives of our members and move them along in their Jewish journey. This far reaching and ambitious vision will profoundly affect the future of our communities by offering something meaningful to every single member.”
