Ealing United Synagogue Celebrates 90 Years

EALING UNITED SYNAGOGUE CELEBRATES 90 YEARS


Members young and old from the Ealing United Synagogue joined in celebrations last week as the Synagogue hosted a special dinner to celebrate its 90th anniversary.

Over 200 guests of the Ealing 'extended family' attended the evening with everyone having a connection to the community - be it past or present. Special guests included the Chief Rabbi and Lady Sacks, who met the Executive members of the Synagogue before the Chief Rabbi addressed the audience.

Speaking about the warmth of the community and loyalty of its members over the past 90 years, the Chief Rabbi told members how he looked forward to celebrating their centenary in ten years time before making a presentation to long standing community member, Neil Shestopal, in recognition of his dedication to the community. Other speakers included Rabbi Hershi Vogel who delivered a D'Var Torah and prominent community members, Rev. Dr Norman Gale and Clive Lawton.

Among the guests at the dinner were Jerrold Assersohn and Evelyn Shindler, descendents of the original Synagogue founders who were present with their families and Marion Crystal, whose parents were the first couple to be married at Ealing Synagogue back in September 1921. David Kaplan, Community Services Director at the United Synagogue, and Simon Hochhauser, President of the United Synagogue, were also in attendance.

Altogether, £10,000 was raised in celebration of Ealing's anniversary, which will go towards the ongoing maintenance of the community.

Robin Preston, Chairman of Ealing Synagogue, commented:
"The community spirit shown by its founders 90 years ago is clearly evident today. The presence of so many friends and members who came to celebrate made it a wonderfully enjoyable occasion. 90 years on we continue to be an active and vibrant community and are very optimist about our future."
