PROJECT CHESED RECRUITS FIRST FIELD-WORKER
Project Chesed, the new charitable initiative launched by the United Synagogue earlier this year, and partnered by London School of Jewish Studies, has appointed its first fieldworker.
Helen Myer, aged 21, from Hadley Highstone, will be working in US communities and schools, joining Project Director Candice Woolfson to develop new ideas alongside existing projects. Helen has a strong track record in organising events to raise awareness and funds for social action projects. While at Leeds University, she helped facilitate the ‘Girls Night’ for Breast Cancer Care, the distribution of Purim boxes for Kisharon, the running of a student blood drive, and organised for 38 students to sky dive for Emunah’s Crisis and Intervention Centre in Sderot.
Project Chesed, launched at the end of last year, aims to show the importance of Jewish responsibility for fellow human beings, to encourage more acts of charity and kindness, and to inspire our communities to make a difference.
Project Chesed successes so far include the collection and distribution of hundreds of toys in conjunction with World Jewish Relief to communities in need in Eastern Europe, and linking up with King Solomon High School to produce Purim boxes to distribute to elderly and isolated people in the Ilford area. This Pesach, Project Chesed assisted 27 United Synagogue communities to provide food parcels for members unable to afford the extra expense that Pesach brings, and distributed over 4,000 boxes of matza to people in need. Since December 2007, Project Chesed has produced two educational leaflets and distributed to all United Synagogue members with other ideas for ways to make a difference. With Helen now on board, Project Chesed looks likely to have an even greater impact in achieving its mission.
Helen Myer said ‘I’m looking forward to the challenge of being Project Chesed’s first fieldworker - the opportunity to encourage so many people to make a difference is very exciting.’
Candice Woolfson, Project Chesed Director commented ‘Over the past six months Project Chesed has made a huge impact but there is a lot more work to be done. We welcome Helen to the team and look forward to our future initiatives.’
