TRIBE'S MOVING FIRST VISIT TO POLAND
Over 30 students aged 17 & 18 took part in Tribe's first Poland trip last week spending five 'emotional but rewarding days' touring the Jewish and historical sites across the country. The group was led by Tribe's Executive Director, Rabbi Andrew Shaw and Rabbi Robert Chevins, a leading expert in the Holocaust and Jewish Poland.
The group's first stop was Warsaw where they visited the Warsaw Ghetto memorial and Nojic Synagogue, the last remaining synagogue in the city. The following day included a tour of Majdanek concentration camp followed by Shabbat in Krakow, visiting a variety of the city's synagogues. Following a moving Havdalah ceremony at Plashov Memorial (the labour camp next to Krakow), the group visited the Galicia Museum to learn more about Poland's Jewish Heritage.
The final day was spent in quiet reflection at Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and death camp, culminating in a closing ceremony next to the gas chambers in Birkenau where each participant took the name of one of the victims and lit a candle in their memory. Before returning to Britain later that day, the group sung Hatikvah under the watchtower at the entrance to Birkenau.
Avi Friedmann, Tribe Teens Executive, commented: "This trip was an emotional rollercoaster for us all and the participants gained so much as a group. Tribe is so proud of its participants and we look forward to continuing to work with them in all our communities, remembering the past to build our future".
Eli Gottleib, participant on the Poland trip, said: "The Tribe Poland Trip epitomised the essence of Judaism - that we should learn from the past to build the future. It was a once in a lifetime experience and I am grateful to Tribe for the opportunity to be part of the trip."
