TRIBE'S 60-DAY GUIDE TO 60 YEARS OF ISRAEL

To mark Israel’s 60th birthday, the United Synagogue and the young US, Tribe, are following up the 60 Days book series with a 60 Days for 60 Years Israel edition.

This will be launched in Jerusalem on Sunday at a ceremony hosted by Tribe executive director Rabbi Andrew Shaw, with Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks among those present.

The idea is for participants worldwide to read an essay a day commemorating each year of Israel’s establishment. The final reading will be on the day prior to the anniversary. The book will be sent to every United Synagogue household and has been taken up by regional groups and other communal organisations. It is also being distributed in America, Canada, Australia and South Africa.

Project manager Dina Brawer said the US and Tribe were “proud to be behind such an inspirational and international project. Tribe is creating an opportunity for Jews around the world to unite and reflect on the miracle of Israel and the meaning of Jewish values by taking just five minutes out of their day.”

l To promote 60 Days for 60 Years, Knesset member Rabbi Michael Melchior delivered a breakfast-time Israel briefing at Belmont Synagogue on Sunday.

Rabbi Melchior discussed the current security situation in Israel, covering Sderot and Gaza. He also outlined initiatives he is involved in to foster links between the Muslim world and Jewish religious leaders.

Belmont minister Rabbi Daniel Roselaar praised Rabbi Melchior as “an inspiring speaker” with a “refreshingly moderate approach to some of the problems that Israel is facing”.
