GOLDERS GREEN SHUL UP FOR REDEVELOPMENT
“Expressions of interest” are being invited for Golders Green Synagogue, as its owners consider whether to put the iconic building up for sale.
The United Synagogue, which owns the site, has instructed chartered surveyors Savoy Stewart to market part of it as part of the synagogue’s redevelopment plans.
A spokesperson for the firm said it was unlikely the site would be sold for residential use, as it was Grade II listed by English Heritage last year, but they are inviting all offers of interest.
The synagogue’s minister, Rabbi Harvey Belovski, told the JC: “There is no question but that the synagogue is staying put, and so is the community.
“We are a vibrant and growing community and this is all part of our plan to reorganise our buildings to provide [as much as possible] for our future.”
One option being considered is that the main building will be sold, with the proceeds used to develop a purpose-built synagogue and community facility on the land at the back of the site. The surveyors are advertising the Dunstan Road shul as a 12,300 sq ft “freehold with vacant possession”.
Or the US could sell the land, and use the proceeds towards refashioning the main building into a communal facility.
A third plan is to sell the whole site and work with the purchaser to provide appropriate facilities on the site.
Jacqui Zinkin, the synagogue chairman, said: “We are investigating a number of the ideas presented by our members. Golders Green is a dynamic community and we hope to find a solution.”
