HIGHGATE SYNAGOGUE APPOINTS NEW RABBI

The United Synagogue is delighted to announce that Rabbi Nicky Liss has been appointed as the Rabbi of Highgate Synagogue. At a General Meeting of the community on Monday 26th November, community members fully endorsed the recommendation of the Board of Management.

Rabbi Liss will join the Highgate community in Summer 2008, succeeding Rabbi Yitzchok Sufrin, who is retiring after 14 years of outstanding service.

Rabbi Liss is currently the halachic authority and one of the head counsellors of Yeshivas Midrash Shmuel Community in Jerusalem. He previously studied at yeshivot in Gateshead and Israel and received semicha from the Rabbinate of Israel. He is married to Shuli, and has 4 children.

Duncan Gee, Chairman of Highgate Synagogue said “We are delighted to appoint Rabbi Nicky Liss, who we consider to be a worthy successor to Rabbi Sufrin. Rabbi Sufrin, supported always by the Rebbetzin has established a thriving community in Highgate, and we are confident that Rabbi Liss and his wife Shuli will continue this exciting development.”

Stuart Taylor, Interim Chief Executive of the United Synagogue, commented: “Rabbi Liss’ youthful energy and enthusiasm will enable the Highgate community to continue to thrive under his leadership and will assist in attracting new members. We are delighted to welcome him into the United Synagogue family.”
