MEET THE RABBI - RABBI DAVID MASON, KINGSTON, SURBITON AND DISTRICT SYNAGOGUE

Rabbi David Mason, Kingston, Surbiton and District Synagogue

Rabbi David Mason joined the United Synagogue four years ago. He gained ordination at Yeshivat Hamivtar in Israel in 2003.

Are you a family man?

I have a wife, Elisheva; and two children, Hodaya, who is nearly four, and Netanel, who is two.

We try to use Monday as a day to go out as a family, and our favourite outing is to visit one of the many local Surrey farms. It’s great for the kids, and Elisheva and myself enjoy it as well.

Tell us about a typical week at the synagogue

A week in the synagogue will vary. There are fixed elements such as preparing and giving shiurim, services, visiting people, preparing for Shabbat, festivals and special occasions. I sit on many of the synagogue committees, so evenings will be busy. But I will also find myself on interfaith forums and other such less regular activities. A typical week is definitely difficult to pin down.

Tell us what you like most about your role

I am most inspired by the possibilities to help individuals and families in difficult, trying situations. I have been studying Family Therapy to develop these abilities. I do enjoy being there for the members.

Tell us why you decided to become a rabbi

I was learning in yeshiva in 1993, in between university. I felt that I could contribute to guiding people towards a deeper but balanced observance of Judaism.

Define your Judaism

Serious about deepening knowledge of halachah while cognisant of the world around.
