MEET THE RABBI - RABBI EPHRAIM LEVINE, WATFORD SYNAGOGUE
Rabbi Ephraim Levine, Watford Synagogue
Rabbi Ephraim Levine has served the Hertfordshire United Synagogue congregation for almost a year. He gained semicha at Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim in Kfar Chabad, Israel, in 1997. He formerly served in the pulpit of the United Synagogue’s now defunct West Ham shul in East London.
Tell us about your family?
My wife, Rochel, and I have two boys aged almost three and one.
Tell us about a typical week at the synagogue?
I’m not sure if there is such a thing as a typical week but speaking with members on the phone, home visits and answering emails and phone calls from the Jewish community in Watford all definitely occur on a regular basis. Between all that I try to find some time for preparing leyning and a sermon. The climax of all the week’s events is Shabbos. We have a children’s service and a cholent kiddush once a month and have just introduced a Birthday Club for children. Watford is quickly becoming the next place to move into. We are growing almost week by week and the shul is seen as the centre of the community.
Tell us what you like most about your role?
I love working with a community that is ready to push the boundaries. The general interest and thirst for real Judaism is seen in the courses and programmes we run that are all well attended. There is nothing more pleasurable than working with a community that wishes to grow.
Tell us what you do in your time off?
I am also a member of the CST and enjoy wedding and portrait photography, when I can find the time.
