MEET THE RABBI

Rabbi Baruch Davis, Chigwell and Hainault Synagogue

Rabbi Baruch Davis has been rabbi at the Essex United Synagogue congregation for 10 years.

Tell us about a typical week: Every day is different. I juggle my shul position with several other roles: governor of King Solomon High School and Ilford Jewish Primary School, secretary of the US Rabbinical Council and its liaison with Tribe, the youth arm of the US, and editor of the Daf Hashavua, the leaflet explaining the weekly parsha [portion].

What did you do before? In 1984, I was working in the Israeli Ministry of Finance. My wife, Nechama, was teaching English. We both felt that we could make a greater contribution to the Jewish world, so I resigned my position, returned to yeshiva and took semicha in 1987.

I was Rabbi of the Adelaide Hebrew Congregation, South Australia, for close to a decade before arriving at Chigwell in September 1997.

What do you like most about your role? We are blessed to live in a warm, friendly, caring and very vibrant community, so I enjoy most of what I do. Perhaps the most satisfying thing is making a difference in people’s lives.

Are you a family man? Nechama and I have six sons, aged 22 to five. My wife, children and extended family are the most important thing to me. Any spare time I spend with my family.

What inspires your weekly sermon? I read the press, consider how a current issue may link to the portion of the week; or focus on a community simchah.
