MEET THE RABBI

Rabbi Yossi Ives of Richmond Synagogue

Rabbi Yossi Ives — who likes to be called Yossi — has been the rabbi of Richmond’s United Synagogue congregation, Surrey, since 2003.

What did you do before?: “I have been at Cardiff United Synagogue, was director of a community centre in Leeds, a lecturer in rabbinics in Brussels, was a trainee rabbi in Sydney and have been chazan in Canada.”

Are you a family man? “I am married to Rivkie, who is a teacher and head of Richmond cheder. We have six children, including two sets of twins, who range from a year to nine. I enjoy spending days out with my family.”

Tell us about your Judaism: “I am enthusiastic about innovative community events and believe that Judaism should contribute to the social improvement of the Jewish community and the wider world. I would describe my present community as having an open mind and an open heart.”

What is on your CV? “I have written a book on Kabbala in Hebrew, and one on life skills that is awaiting publication. I am writing a primer on Jewish mysticism. I have a masters degree in social sciences and am currently writing a PhD on motivation for performance. I am a qualified life-coach, and have set up a coaching training programme called 3W Coaching. I am also involved in a number of charitable initiatives in Israel and the UK, notably setting up the International School of Emergency Medicine with MDA and a research unit for Jewish values in social science at Bar Ilan University.”

Goodness. Any time left for hobbies? “I enjoy reading, writing, and music.”
