'EXCEPTIONAL' VOLUNTEERS REWARDED
Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks and a leading University of London academic paid tribute to the United Synagogue’s top volunteers at an award ceremony at St John’s Wood Synagogue in North West London.
Professor John Annette, Dean of the Faculty of Continuing Education at Birkbeck College, thanked the winners for their “tireless efforts” on behalf of their local communities while Sir Jonathan told the winners the event was “a wonderful opportunity to thank all the nominees for all they have given to their communities”.
The winners were chosen for their “exceptional service and devotion” and selected from among more than 100 nominees from synagogues across the US. There were six categories, including Tribe young individual and Tribe communal; new volunteer; adult individual; adult communal; long-service and communal group. The youngest winner was Jonathan Sherman, 18, who has worked for five years for the youth service at Kenton Synagogue, North-West London, including serving four years on the shul’s Youth Board. The group award was for Catch at Chigwell and Hainault Synagogue, Essex, which has 30 volunteers and three co-ordinators who regularly visit the elderly, bereaved and others who need support.
Lady Sacks and US president Dr Simon Hochhauser presented the awards.
