The United Synagogue announced on Tuesday, that after 22 years as Rosh Beis Din, Dayan Chanoch Ehrentreu, is to retire after Chanukah, at the end of December 2006, shoitly after his 74th birthday.
The president of the United Synagogue, Dr Simon Hochhauser, commented: "The United Synagogue has been most fortunate to have been able to develop with Dayan Ehrentreu's halachic guidance over the last 22 years. The Dayan has had a profound effect upon both the United Synagogue and mainstream Orthodox Jewish life in the U.K. and indeed beyond these shores. The standing and confidence of the United Synagogue in the realm of halachah has never been higher. Those who come into contact with the Dayan always remark upon his warm and caring manner and this has been in evidence in all' of his work.
Over the past few years the Dayan has also taken steps to ensure that the Beis Din will continue to be served by a team of highly qualified and experienced Dayanim who have benefited significantly from his guidance and leadership. We owe him a deep debt of. gratitude for his long-standing service to the community."
Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks commented: "One of the real delights of my Chief Rabbinatehas been the opportunity to work closely with a Rosh Beis Din of Dayan Ehrentreu's global stature. The Dayan. possesses a rare combination of authority, wisdom, compassion and understanding of onr community. His legacy will endure in the special team of Dayanim he has recruited, and we send him and his Rebbetzin every good wish' for the future."
