JEWS' SHOES
The United Synagogue's Project Chesed has launched a Shoe Aid for Africa campaign, aimed at collecting unwanted footwear and distributing them to underprivileged children.
The first collection took place this week at Hampstead Garden Suburb Synagogue, with a decoration party during which youngsters donated a pair of used shoes, as well as brightening up a pair of plain boots using styling tips from an on-hand shoe decorating entertainer.
The group hopes to spread the programme to other US communities and is currently planning upcoming shoe events.
Candice Woolfson, director of Project Chesed, said: "This year Project Chesed has also collected old pairs of spectacles, toys, baby goods, and chametz for the homeless, making a huge difference to the lives of others."
She added: Shoes are so vitally important to our everyday living - they give us our dignity, and almost nothing seems so wasteful as a pair of shoes going unused. As Jews, we know only too well what a room full of shoes look like. Perhaps we hold a unique responsibility to donate our old shoes towards continued use and help those in desperate need of our support."
