EXTENSION TO WALTHAM ABBEY CEMETERY
Dayan Gelley, Senior Dayan of the London Beth Din, consecrated the new extension to the cemetery at Waltham Abbey on Thursday 30th April. Based on current burials this will provide space for the next 40 years (about 12,000 graves). The extension remains in close proximity to the prayer hall so the walk to loved ones' graves will never be far.
To mark the consecration, the United Synagogue buried a sefer Torah and some siddurim that were no longer usable. The service was attended by US President Simon Hochhauser, Geoffrey Hartnell, Chairman of the Burial Society and Treasurer of the United Synagogue, as well as other local Rabbonim and Chairman of shuls.
Melvyn Hartog, Head of the US Burial Society, commented: ""Waltham Abbey, alongside our other cemeteries, is recognised as one of the best kept cemeteries in the UK and we are able to take care of the deceased with the utmost respect. The new consecration of land will ensure that our members can be provided for and that families can remain together in the years to come.
"All of the staff at Waltham Abbey cemetery perform a fantastic job in all weathers and we take this opportunity to thank them."
