For several years the United Synagogue has supported elderly, isolated and at risk members at Yom Tov time, especially Pesach.
In recent years this undertaking has been managed and developed by Project Chesed. We currently help with the distribution of matzot to several hundred people and arrange with representatives in over 30 synagogues for the provision of food parcels to those in need.
This work has also been extended into Rosh Hashanah, where communities are asked to identify those who might take comfort from a small gesture such as New Year card and honey cake. In 2007 just over 1,000 cakes were distributed.
This notion of Chesed is part of the fabric of the United Synagogue. Indeed, in order to make the whole thing happen, many donations are raised from other US individuals. Touching the lives of our members is something in which we can all share.
