"It is forbidden to cheat people in buying and selling, or to deceive them"
Maimonides, Laws of Selling 18:1
Jewish Law requires that we be fair and honest in all our business dealings. It follows that we should be concerned that the people who supply us with our goods are receiving a fair price, have decent working conditions and control over their lives.
"Justice, justice, you shall pursue..." (Deuteronomy 16:20)
In the last few years we've seen a definite growing trend towards ethical consumerism. Various ethical certifications exist to ensure that the various products we buy have been ethically sourced by the trader and produced in a sustainable manner. This doesn't just apply to food - other items such as clothes and flowers can also carry an ethical certification.
In the Torah we read, "You shall not put a stumbling block before the blind." (Leviticus 19:13). According to the Sages, this includes not using your knowledge or power to the detriment of others. We have a responsibility to ensure that those producing the goods we desire receive a fair deal for their products.
As part of our commitment to be fair and ethical in all our operations, the United Synagogue has pledged to use ethically sourced goods where possible throughout our activities, and we are helping our synagogues to do the same.
