What does the AJE do?

The AJE is the education department of the United Synagogue. We train leaders for Synagogue Children’s Programmes, support and resource our chedarim (part-time centres) and organise Bat and Barmitzvah tests.
In day schools and nurseries, we train teachers, provide curriculum and work on behalf of Jewish schools with the government.

How does the AJE help schools?

For United Synagogue schools, the AJE trains and provides the Foundation governors, who form the majority of the governing body.
For United Synagogue and all other Voluntary Aided and independent Jewish schools, we train class teachers, develop curriculum and provide resources. There is hardly a Jewish school in the UK which does not have some connection with the AJE.

How do I start a career in Jewish Education?

Training and educating the next generation of our community is perhaps the most important and rewarding career you can have.
The AJE has courses from NVQ2 and 3 for Early Year’s staff through to postgraduate teaching qualifications.

How can I learn to help with my Synagogue's Children's Service?

Children’s Services, often called Children's Programmes these days, are run in most synagogues every Shabbat and Yom Tov. The AJE helps to train these dedicated volunteers and provides a website, 'Harayon', full of useful ideas, programmes and activities. For more information call Corinne Van Colle on 020 8457 9712.

How can I become a school governor in a Jewish School?

Throughout the UK, school governors are probably the largest group of volunteers of any type. There are different types of governors, some elected by parents, staff or other interest groups. In Jewish Voluntary Aided Schools the Foundation Body appoints the majority of governors. If you want to become a United Synagogue Foundation governor we offer an initial training course and regular ongoing training. Call Corinne Van Colle on 8457 9712 for more details.

How can I become a member of the AJE?

AJE membership is open to individuals, schools, nurseries, chedarim etc. For an information pack call David Foskett on 020 8457 9713.

How can the AJE help me find a school or nursery for my child?

Every year AJE staff help hundreds of parents from both the London area and abroad, in their quest for the right school for their children. Our advice is free and impartial, but we cannot guarantee that you will get your first choice of school, as demand is high and schools have strict, government regulated admissions criteria. Call Corinne Van Colle on 020 8457 9712 for more information of email corinnevc@aje.org.uk

How can I find a tutor for my son's Barmitzvah?

The AJE maintains a register of appropriately qualified tutors who have all been CRB checked. We strongly advise you to employ a tutor who has been approved by us. Call David Foskett on 020 8457 9713 or email admin@aje.org.uk for an up-to-date list.
